Next month Phil Spiers-Holcroft will be running an ultra-marathon in honour of his mum, who sadly passed away to Motor Neurone Disease back in 2020.
Phil originally planned to run the race 2 years ago but unfortunately Covid-19 put that on hold. Now fulfilling the promise to his mum, he is running the 100km ultra-marathon ‘Race to the Stones’ in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association.
MND is a rare neurological condition that causes degeneration of nerves in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in wasting of the muscles. Sadly, there is currently no cure. The MNDA focuses on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those living with or affected by Motor Neurone Disease.
From Phil: “To watch someone, you love suffer as this cruel disease erodes away everything you hold dear is agonising and changes you as a person forever. This disease took her independence, her mobility, her quality of life and ultimately, ended her life prematurely. It is such a horrible disease, and I really hope one day there will be a cure.
My Mum always supported me in my running endeavours, so it seems fitting to run an Ultra marathon in her memory to raise money for the MND association. Any donation you kindly give will be allocated locally to the Hereford and Worcester branch of the MNDA.
I know it is testing times with the cost of living, but any small amount would be greatly received and appreciated, and please know a contribution from yourself will also help us mentally to finish the challenge! Thank you in advance.”
Phil’s family members have also raised money through various activities like participating in a coast-to-coast bike ride, running in an ultra-marathon, singing in rock choirs, and climbing Kilimanjaro!
Everyone at Newspace is wishing you the best of luck Phil!
